Background

Background for ReNED creation

In 2002 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Danida) carried out an evaluation of the support to research activities. The resulting so-called Hernes report recommended that improved contact between Danida and the research community should be established in order to enhance the utilisation of research results. Danida responded to this recommendation by suggesting the establishment of and funding a number of research networks within relevant sectors.

The research community within environment and development responded to this challenge and ReNED was created. ReNED is an open network of active researchers within a broad range of environmental and development research fields, including biodiversity, natural ressource management, industrial and urban environment, water resources management, marine resources management, environmental health, occupational health and safety, etc. Given the interdisciplinary aspects of most environmental issues, both natural and social science researchers are represented in the network as well as representatives from the private sector and NGOs.

ReNED was formally established at the first general assembly on 28 May 2003 during which the board was elected and the rules of procedure established. Funding for establishing the secretariat and for various activities was obtained from Danida in November 2003.
