17th Sahel Workshop: Natural Resource
Management in Sahel - Lessons Learnt
6-7 November 2006, Tune Landboskole, Kursus- og
Konferencecenter, Grevevej 20, Greve, Denmark
This workshop is organized by Research Network for
Environment and Development (ReNED), Danish Network for
Agricultural Research
for Development (NETARD), Research Network for Governance, Economic Policy and
Public
Administration (GEPPA) and
Danish Water Forum-Research, jointly with Danida.
Background and aims
The West African countries often known as the “Sahel or CILSS countries” have
received Danish development
assistance for several decades and there has been a strong focus on supporting
the agricultural and water sectors.
Moreover, there has been regional environmental support guided by the Danida
Sahel Environmental Strategy and
governance issues cut across all the development sectors. Danida has recently
decided to expand the West African
aid programmes to include Mali as a full programme country and increase the
support to Niger and there is still a
strong interest in the Danish resource base on West Africa to maintain a forum
for discussion of development
issues in the region. Against this background it has been decided to resume the
Sahel Workshops with an event
focusing on cross-disciplinary issues of environment, agriculture, water and
governance.
The Sahel Workshop 2006 will aim at:
-
Providing a status of development
trends and environmental change in the region and pointing to
strategic
considerations for development assistance approaches to address these trends
-
Debating environmental and
governance issues in relationship to development in the agricultural and
water
sectors, e.g. focusing on:
-
Decentralization processes and
their impact on local level resource management and
governance
-
The role of the Convention to
Combat Desertification, TERRAFRICA and other international
initiatives in
improving environmental and water resources management,
agricultural
development and governance in West Africa
-
Regional linkages in environmental
and water management, trade and markets for agricultural
products and good
governance networks
-
As previous workshops, integrating
perspectives from researchers, development professionals in the
public and
private sector, NGOs, politicians, journalists and others in order to ensure
broad-based
discussions. The workshop will also identify a future forum for
continued discussion of development in
the Sahel.
